Arrested Motion
A study of scent, movement and the body, translated into a family of sculptural perfume flacons.

Movement
The body is shaped through movement.
A volume is set turning. The outer surface lags behind the core, gathering on one side and stretching on the other. One frame of that state is held and hardened.
Where the turn is stopped decides what the object becomes. Stopped late, the surplus reaches the ground. Stopped early, it stays at the shoulder.

Flacons
A teardrop flacon in finely ribbed ivory, collared in gold and capped with carved fan and leaf forms. Nine designs follow one rule: the fold that makes the body also makes the shoulder and the stopper.
The fold leaves the body and opens as a collar at the shoulder.

Explorations
Eight variants drawn from the same plan. Each one stops the turn at a different height, and the pleated shell resolves the surplus differently: held close to the body, or carried out until it reaches the ground.
The neck and stopper stay constant across the set. Only the body and the reach of the crown change, which is what makes the differences legible.

In the Round
Rotation
One continuous turn generates the whole body.
Surface
Pleats hold the turn. Smooth areas record where it stopped.
Closure
Turned timber and polished metal mark the point of touch.
Asymmetry
There is no single front. The object has to be walked around.

Material
Ivory ceramic
A satin bisque that holds shadow instead of highlight.
Warm timber
Turned, and the only part warm to the hand before it is warm from it.
Polished brass
At every junction, where two materials have to meet.
Dried blossom
A gilded armature carrying the one part never turned, cast or glazed.
The fragrance moves on. The bottle remains, holding the shape of what has passed.
